Are Window Blinds Really Necessary?

Window blinds are those coverings for windows which are placed on the interior side of the windows, meaning inside the house. Be it in Bali, on the beach, or in the mountains, blinds, like shades and curtains, have several roles such as protecting people inside from the sunlight, or from viewers’ sight. They are extremely useful if you live in a very sunny area, and your windows are oriented towards South, which means they are in the sunlight for the whole day.

Apartments in crowded cities have a problem, because neighbors from the next building can easily see inside your apartment, therefore blinds are not a luxury but a necessity in such cases.

Like other house decorations and accessories, blinds follow fashion trends, so we feel the need to change them as these trends change and new types and models of blinds appear on the market, with more and more sophisticated shutting devices and made of various materials such as plastic, wood, PVC, aluminum, bamboo, or composite materials.

Most Common Types of Blinds

Window blinds fall into several large categories, as it follows. Some of them may be found in shops as blinds to go, while some others need customization from the merchant before being ready to install.

Venetian blinds

Venetian blinds date from very long time ago and in the beginning they were made of wide curved metal slats, with variants for the shape: either flat or curved, going to an elliptical shape sometimes.

Faux Blinds or PVC Blinds

As metal was quite expensive, the need for cheaper products led the manufacturers to search for new materials which were able to offer the protection against sun or indiscreet views. This is how they came to the conclusion that PVC is good, and so the faux blinds were invented. Cheap, light, UV protecting, waterproof and easy to clean, PVC blinds came quickly in fashion, being produced in pre-determined sizes, so everybody could afford to buy some for their windows. The more picky customers had the chance to get faux blinds with the slats’ surface embossed to imitate wood, thus benefiting from an elegant look at affordable prices.

Wood Blinds

Elegant, warm and beautiful, wooden blinds became the choice of middle class and upper middle class quite quickly. Wood is expensive, but manufacturers found solutions to decrease the costs and the end consumer prices by using assorted Oriental hardwood in order to create the value, or economy wood blinds. The premium ones are made from American hardwood, namely Basswood.

Too bad that wood color fades in time, but if you don’t mind this aspect and you have the budget, this is the best solution to cover your windows, especially the very large ones (because wood is extremely light and you can manipulate the blinds easily, even in case of big dimensions).

One variety of wood blinds that never fade color is the bamboo blinds, which can give your home a cozy feeling and make you and your guests feel good by creating a great atmosphere of nature inside your room.

Composite blinds

Composite materials used to manufacture blinds slats are a combination of wood products and polymers. They are either cheap or mid-priced, and the colors are not so diverse: mostly white, plus a few other darker tones. Composite blinds are very resistant, easy to clean and good UV isolators.

In terms of brands, there are a few blinds which became most known for their properties, and many times thanks to the advertisements on TV or in newspapers and home improvement magazines: Bali blinds, Hunter Douglas shades, Graber blinds, Levelor blinds, Hickory nc blinds, Hunter Douglas blinds.

Speaking of their final destination, there are office blinds, home windows blinds, door blinds, bathroom blinds.
